Salt River Schools is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students. This includes their mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. At SRES, we are blessed to have an on-site team of behavioral health specialists and counselors, as well as partnerships with Community care and crisis groups to assist students in need.
Between 2016 and 2021, suicide self-injury cases among patients ages 5-18 seen at children's hospital emergency departments increased by 168.6 percent, according to data from the Children’s Hospital Association’s Pediatric Health Information System. Suicide attempts, ideation, and self-injury have become the most common mental health conditions seen in children’s hospitals’ emergency departments, conditions that affect Native American youth at disproportionately higher rates.
This is not a problem that can be fixed with silence. Our children need us to talk about it. Suicide prevention saves lives, and September is Teen Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
Struggling youth are encouraged to call or text 602-248-8336 (TEEN), a 24/7 crisis line operated by Arizona’s Teen Lifeline, which you can learn more about at teenlifeline.org.
Salt River operates an all-ages crisis line 24/7 at 480-850-9230. Click here to learn more about this service.
A recent student experience on our campus may bring up discussions of self-harm or suicide among children at school or at home. Due to privacy laws, we are unable to disclose more information about this specific situation. However, our team is ready to listen and be there for students; please call the school if you would like to set up a time for your student to speak with a counselor or behavioral health specialist.
We appreciate our families and your help to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
Respectfully,
Don Schopp, SRES Principal
