Welcome to MO-vember, which celebrates a favorite author in the SRES Library, Mo Willems, who has written many books, such as the Elephant and Piggie series.
There are many reasons to spotlight an author. An author study can help build critical thinking skills as students compare and contrast themes, or analyze text, illustrations, and characters. It also improves writing skills as the author becomes a ‘writing mentor’ for readers as the students read and respond to the author’s work.
In the SRES Library, a favorite reason to bring attention to an author is because kids can ‘bond’ with their author and form a deeper attachment to books. Their reading experience becomes more personal and fulfilling. Students may even expand their reading beyond the author and read books the author recommends. An author spotlight can also create a community of readers as connections develop through shared reading experiences.
This is our second year celebrating MO-vember in the SRES Library. It’s FUN! But it is no secret that an author spotlight can spark an interest in reading that might not otherwise ignite with new or reluctant readers!
